Doin' "the worm"

Three days ago, when this entry was just a baby blog post idea wandering about in my head, my opening line was going to be "I used to have an easy baby." While this is, technically, still true, the implication that it is no longer true is no longer true. Wait... maybe I should have let this post grow up a little more before sending it out into the open with blatent repetition in the opening paragraph...

Sorry, back on topic here. In the days leading up to Christmas, we really seemed to be losing some ground with Lucy, especially in the area of nursing. She used to be so flexible, eating on the go, not minding the nursing cover, an all-business kind of eater. Last week, she did a 180. She decided the nursing cover was her new #1 nemesis. She also had random bouts of vehement crying, complete with arched back, before she would settle in to eat, leaving me feeling like a I must be doing something terribly wrong. Other times, she would decide to dilly dally before starting her meal, elongating the time that I had to be away from people and feeling secluded.

However, this seems to have just been a phase. My mom, ever so wise in these matters, did tell me that it would all be over in a week, and right she was! Well, except for the occasional dilly dallying before eating. But you know what? That has turned into a precious time! Lucy just lays on my lap and smiles and gurgles and does her very best to talk to me. What a sweet time to treasure, instead of being antsy for her to move things along.

I feel like I am slowly discovering how precious Lucy is. It's like walking up a hill and gradually being able to see more and more of what's on the other side. This "conversation time" before Lucy eats has been another step up that hill. I feel like the Grinch, having been sour about having a rough time at Christmas, and then having my heart grow a size! :) It is so difficult to put into words the way my heart swells up with love for my daughter.

Lucy's Christmas present from Aunt Jackie was a little glow worm!
This morning was another step up that hill. Jacob brought Lucy in to me this morning so she could nurse, and then came back to burp her. She was all swaddled in her green "SwaddleMe" blanket, which makes her look like a little glow worm. Lucy was bright-eyed and alert, wriggling around as best she could while Jacob held her. Jacob asked her if she was dancing and "doing 'the worm'". That little moment just made me smile. I love my family.

All swaddled up for sleeping... she sure lights up our lives. :)

  1. A wise mom is invaluable when our little ones go through tough times. Isn't motherhood an adventure? It is the lovliest adventure with the most beautiful horizons I could ever imagine. :-) Enjoy!
